Home Fire Safety Visits

This service offers free advice on preventing fires and what to do should a fire occur in your home. You can book a face-to-face home fire safety visit for yourself if you qualify, or use the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) online home fire safety checker tool if you want to carry out your own.

Face-to-Face Home Fire Safety Visit

This is carried out by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and takes place at your home, lasting approximately 30 minutes. As part of this service, smoke alarms may be fitted and subsequent maintenance and replacement of these becomes the responsibility of the homeowner. Smoke alarms are not provided as a matter of course, and we can discuss our eligibility criteria with you during the visit. We will visit your home to deliver tailored fire safety advice and discuss any risks we find. We will also talk about how you should react or respond in an emergency.

We only target our visits at people and places where we know there is a higher risk of fire. The information you supply in the application process will help us to determine your risk, so please complete the form below as completely and accurately as possible.

We do require your consent to visit and following the visit, we can make onward referrals for support for you if needed.

Online Home Fire Safety Self Checker

This easy-to-follow home fire safety check has been developed through a partnership between the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), Fire Kills and Safelincs. It will take you through your home one room at a time and the simple questions will help you spot fire risks as you go around your home. The tool will offer tips and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks. At the end, you will receive a personalised fire safety action plan to help keep you and your household safe from fire. By answering the questions, you will be able to get helpful advice on any actions you need to take to keep you and your loved ones, and your home safe, and if necessary, receive the offer of a free home fire safety visit carried out by Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service.

We want you, your family, friends and neighbours to be safe from fire in your home. Requesting a visit

Advice on how to stay safe at home is available on this website but if you have specific concerns or queries you can contact us to request further advice and support.

In addition to the guidance provided below, you can make a request for a home safety check. You can also refer a friend or relative so if you know or care for someone who is over the age of 60 or who has a physical or mental health need that affects their ability to react or escape in a fire you can encourage them to contact us or refer them (with their permission).

We prioritise this service for those who are most at risk. Please remember to check the identity of any visitors to your home.

It only takes 15 minutes to complete and you will answer questions about your property and lifestyle, and at the end you will get a personalised fire safety action plan to download or print out, which will help keep you and your household safe from fire. It will take you through your home one room at a time and the simple questions will help you spot fire risks as you go around your home, the tool will then offer tips and advice on the steps you can take to reduce those risks. In some cases, it may suggest that we attend your property to install safety measures for you.
